Importance of Mental Wealth – Balancing Act: Navigating University, Work, and Life

Sienna Simpson

Hi my name’s Sienna, a 4th year Behavioural Science (Psychology) student on placement at Leading Wellness Solutions. Let me take you on a journey of a snippet of my life as a university student whilst also working full time. We will dive into how I balance a social life while at placement, university, and work in this crazy thing we call life!

Now you might think, Sienna if you’re so busy why on earth would you voluntarily pick placement! I thought that exact same question to myself many times, but as I’m sure as most of you do, you just make it work. When I found Miriam and Dr Simone founding Leading Wellness Solutions and went on a deep dive into their business, I immediately knew this is something I have to jump on. Two amazing, smart and creative women creating a joint venture in educating and training individuals and organisations into have a mentally healthy and sustainable workplace was something I was so passionate in. Placement has taught me many applicable skills that support my work life as well as social life in maintaining my mental wealth. So come along this short journey below of tips and tricks that I have learnt over the years, and some extra bonuses my time at Leading Wellness Solutions has taught me.

Life as a university student can often feel like juggling multiple pins. For those of us studying while managing a full-time job or any job for that matter, a vibrant social life, and maintaining personal well-being, the challenge can seem even more daunting. From late-night study sessions to balancing work commitments and finding time to unwind with friends or family, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Because I decided that that wasn’t enough for me, I decided to go on placement!

But amidst all this chaos, there’s a powerful tool that can help us keep everything in balance: mental wealth, and it is so important.

Studying whether that be at University or Tafe, is a rigorous and rewarding experience. Between lectures, assignments, and placement hours, the workload can sometimes feel endless. It’s not uncommon to find yourself buried under a mountain of textbooks and research papers, trying to absorb complex theories and practical applications.

Adding a full-time job into the mix introduces another layer of complexity. Whether it’s a part-time role related to your field of study or something entirely different, managing work commitments alongside academic responsibilities can be a juggling act no matter what level you are at. It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of work, study, and sleep, leaving little room for anything else.

The Role of Mental Wealth in Achieving Balance

Mental wealth refers to the state of being mentally and emotionally healthy, capable of coping with life’s challenges, and thriving despite stress. It’s about developing resilience, self-awareness, and a positive mindset that supports our overall well-being. For many students who are also working, support systems like an employee assistance program can play an important role in protecting mental wealth during busy or stressful times.

In the hustle and bustle of academic and work life, self-care might seem like a luxury you can’t afford, I know that is something I struggle with. However, incorporating small, manageable self-care practices into your routine can make a significant difference. This could be as simple as taking a walk in the park, enjoying a hobby, or setting aside time for relaxation. Self-care helps recharge your mental batteries and maintain your overall mental wealth.

Seek Support and Communicate:

Don’t hesitate to reach out for support when needed. Whether it’s talking to a mentor, discussing your workload with a supervisor, or confiding in friends and family, communicating your needs and challenges can provide relief and help you navigate through stressful periods. Remember, seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Embrace Healthy Habits:

Maintaining happy habits such as regular exercise, spending time outdoors, and connecting with loved ones is essential for mental wealth. Physical activity releases endorphins that boost mood, while spending time in nature and with family and friends provides emotional support and relaxation. Try to incorporate these activities into your routine, even if it’s just a few minutes each day.

Practice Mindfulness and Resilience:

Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help manage stress and improve focus. Developing resilience through positive thinking and problem-solving strategies enables you to handle challenges more effectively. These practices contribute to mental wealth by enhancing your ability to stay grounded and adapt to changing circumstances.

Feeling Seen and Heard

If you’re feeling like you’re constantly on the edge of being overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Many students and professionals no matter your age may face similar challenges and pressures. It’s important to acknowledge your efforts and celebrate small victories along the way. Celebrate all your wins no matter how big or small.

Remember, maintaining mental wealth is not about achieving perfection but about finding a sustainable and fulfilling balance. By prioritizing self-care, setting realistic goals, seeking support, embracing healthy habits, and practicing mindfulness, you can navigate the demands of university, work, and life.

In the end, your journey is unique to you, and it’s okay to adjust your path as needed. Embrace the process, and know that with mental wealth at the core, you have the strength to thrive and achieve balance in all areas of your life.
